Mesh – the personal CRM formerly known as Clay at clay.earth – is an AI-powered cloud service that builds and enriches your contact list automatically from your email, calendar, LinkedIn, and X. Handshake is the opposite philosophy: a free, local-first desktop app where your network is a deliberate map – the people who actually matter, in plain markdown files you own.
Mesh's pitch is that the CRM maintains itself: connect your accounts and the people you interact with appear, enriched with photos, roles, and job-change updates pulled from the web, with an AI assistant on top. It's genuinely slick, and for someone who lives in email and calendar it removes almost all upkeep. (Note: Mesh is unrelated to Clay.com, a B2B sales-enrichment platform that shares the old name.)
The trade is structural, not a missing feature: for Mesh to maintain your network, a cloud service must read your communications – and what it builds is a mirror of your inbox, not your network. Everyone who ever emailed you shows up; the people who matter are buried among the people who don't.
